WHEN Kansas police officer Mark Engravelle was called to a local Walmart he thought it would be like any other shoplifting call out.
But what happened next pulled at his heartstrings and the way he responded changed a woman’s life, helping out the young mum instead of arresting her for stealing.
Mother-of-six Sarah Robinson was stopped at the Roeland Park store after she was caught stealing nappies, clothing and shoes for her children, aged 2 to 15.
The young widow was sobbing, thinking that she was going to jail for trying to provide for her kids the only way she thought she could.
“I went to Walmart, grabbed clothes, shoes, diapers, wipes, and just walked out, but they caught me,” she told ABC News.
“My heart just dropped. I didn’t know what to say or do. It was horrible. I thought I was going to jail.”

But Ms Robinson got lucky when Engravelle showed up, immediately noticing her children’s worn shoeless feet and taking pity on the sobbing woman.
After letting the young woman walk free with a ticket for misdemeanour for theft, the officer went back inside the Walmart store and purchased supplies for the children, including the items their struggling mother had attempted to take.
“Being a father myself, it obviously pulled at my heart,” he said.
“What she did was wrong but I think her heart was in the right place with wanting to take care of her children.”
The Robinsons had been struggling to make ends meet, living in Sarah’s car since her husband died unexpectedly a few year ago.
since the Roeland Park officer’s heartwarming act made headlines, the police station has been inundated with calls from people wanting to help the family.
Ms Robinson said she was embarrassed by her actions, but had run out of people to ask for help, and was incredibly grateful for Engravelle’s generosity.
“He helped us when nobody else will,” she told a local news station.
